This is a Computational Fluid Dynamics model of the airflow over a pickup truck. The red is high pressure, the blue is low or negative pressure. As you can see, there is a large amount of disturbance in the bed of the truck. The red is produced by the air hitting the tailgate as it passes over the cab. It then flows forward at a high rate of speed where it hits the cab and starts a circular motion. The tailgate creates a huge amount of drag and the auto companies solution is to put a "spoiler" on the tailgate. THAT IS NO SOLUTION. When you remove your tailgate, the deformations in the sheetmetal for the wheelhouses and strucure still create a substantial amount of disturbance, or DRAG.
This is a side view of another Computational Fluid Dynamics model. This replicates and validates what the other model shows. The tailgate is a large "Air Dam" certainly not what would be designed for smooth airflow characteristics. Our studies also validate these models and show that the ALATE "Aero-Lockers" tm SUBSTANTIALLY improve the airflow over the back of the truck to a far higher degree than a tonnue cover would provide. This is the Aero Locker tm in Black and Orange. This is painted per factory code. Our standard color is Grey and optional colors include body color (paint code required), custom colors including 2 tones or bedliner material.
